Green activists deflate 4x4 tyres

Police are probing reports that eight 4x4 vehicles in Oxfordshire had their tyres let down by green activists.

An anonymous message posted on the internet claims up to 32 Sports Utility Vehicles were targeted in the Marston, Headington and Summertown areas.

But police said only eight people had so far come forward to report the incidents overnight last Thursday.

A letter was left on each vehicle declaring "driving an SUV is an unacceptably selfish act".

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "We are aware of the reports on a website from protesters claiming to have let down the tyres, and posted environmental warning letters on 4x4 vehicles in Oxford.

"We respect the views and opinions of others and live in a democracy.

"[But] I would like to remind people that by taking the law into ones own hands and damaging other people's property is an unacceptable crime."

The eight reported incidents were in Ferry Road, Nicholson Road, Weldon Road, Raymund Road, Grays Road, Jack Straw's Lane, Staunton Road and Southfield Road.
